ABOUT US

One of the Oldest Continuously Meeting Pediatric Organizations in North America

Founded in 1940, The Pediatric Travel Club is a unique organization of 60 thoughtful and collegial pediatricians from 14 northeastern cities who meet annually on a weekend in the fall for a scientific meeting and to renew longstanding friendships.

At that time, opportunities for personal interaction between leading pediatricians were limited, and it was decided to invite a few prominent individuals from 14 cities within an overnight train ride from each other to meet yearly to share insights on pediatric science and practice. The meeting takes place at each of the 14 cities in rotation. “Travel” in the title refers to the fact that one needs to travel to the meeting, rather than to vacation time. Originally the PTC was intended for pediatricians in clinical practice but it soon became the norm that each city would have 4 members including those in academic as well as clinical practice. Candidates are nominated by the members from their city and are elected by unanimous vote of the membership. The only commitment from members is to attend at least 2-3 meetings every 5 years. At 70 years of age, members attain emeritus status. Emeritus members continue to attend meetings, but the city nominates a new candidate to maintain 4 active members from each site.

Our Chapters

Within 10 years of its founding, the Pediatric Travel Club had chapters in 14 cities in the northeast US/Canada, reflecting the fact that members needed to be able to conveniently “travel” by train for a weekend meeting. Currently, there are active chapters in all of these original cities except Toronto. It is hoped that the Toronto chapter will be reactivated in the near future.

How We Stand Out

The PTC stands out from other medical/pediatric organizations in a number of ways. As a result of the nomination/election process, club members, both academic and clinical, share a high level of intellectual interest and accomplishment and a sense of responsibility to their local community as well as an ability to relate to others positively and professionally. The roster reflects this fact. Second is the percentage of members who attend the meetings. The fact that 60% of active members (and nearly the same fraction of emeritus members) all of whom have busy professional and personal lives attend each of the annual meetings testifies to the value of the meetings to PTC members. Third is the prominent role of members partners. Since 1952, partners have been included and welcomed as participants in the annual meetings. The meeting has, since the early 1950’s included scheduled activities for partners during scientific sessions and they were welcomed at all other activities. As a result, partners and members look forward to attending meetings together and have an opportunity to get to know each other in a way that is not usual to such organizations. The meeting is a time of reunion and fellowship as well as scientific stimulation. The PTC shares with almost all other professional/medical associations of similar age, an unfortunate history of bias, often unconscious, against women. An early history of the PTC describes the role of partners under the subtitle “The Ladies”. In the mid 1970’s, Carolyn Hall was the first woman elected to membership, a step that may have reflected the fact that her father, Burtis Breese, was an early member as well as her own remarkable scientific and clinical accomplishments; at present about 1/3 of active members are women and an increasing number of male partners participate enthusiastically.

Our Annual Meetings

As the meeting rotates among the cities, organizing and hosting the meeting every 14 years is the major obligation of membership in the PTC. The meeting typically begins with an outing on Friday for those members able to attend. Recent outings have included visits to Stow including the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont, Mount Vernon in Washington, DC, Falling Waters near Pittsburgh, the Adirondack Museum north of Albany, and the Nemours Mansion in Wilmington. The outing is followed by a reception on Friday evening. The scientific session on Saturday morning usually involves presentations by representatives of the pediatric department / medical school of the host city. At a semiformal dinner on Saturday evening, new members are welcomed, and the brief business of the club is transacted. A Sunday morning program for members and guests that may or may not have medical overtones is often the highlight of the weekend. The meeting adjourns after brunch or lunch on Sunday.
